Hello everyone,
Server details:
Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 Enterprise - 6.1.7601
Exchange 2010 SP1 RU6 - 14.1.355.1
Volumes:
C: - 136.69GB Total - 13.57GB Free - Healthy (System, Boot, Page File, Active, Crash Dump, Primary Partition)
(Data) D: - 838.09GB Total - 153.33GB Free - Healthy (Primary Partition)
(THI-EXC 2012_08_05 17:01 DISK_01) F: - 2794.36GB Total - 1050.31GB Free - Healthy (Primary Partition)
Exchange Databases:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V14\Mailbox\DB-MBX-imei-EXSTAFF - EDB Size: 19.1GB
D:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V14\Mailbox\Mailbox Database 0916887242 - EDB Size: 394.02GB
D:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V14\Mailbox\Public Folder Database 1263017443 - EDB Size: 202.78GB
When I use Windows Server Backup to backup the Full Server, it runs for 5 sec on 'Creating shadow copies of volumes' then fails with 'The read operation from the volume shadow copy on one of the source volumes failed. Make sure all the volumes included in the
backup operation are available and accessible and then retry the operation. Detailed error: Access is denied'
When I check eventvwr, for the Backup event, it shows Error 521 'The backup operation that started at '2012-08-10T02:08:42.876000000Z' has failed because the Volume Shadow Copy Service operation to create a shadow copy of the volumes being backed up failed
with following error code '2155348106'. Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.'
Some researched asked to check for VSS Application Event logs. I found one Warning from MSExchangeIS - Exchange VSS Writer, Error 9857 which is 'Exchange VSS Writer (instance 0fcdbb52-62a3-4db5-8503-a5a8ab5096a1) has detected an orphaned backup instance (bf23e53e-5127-4310-b564-c142e488dc62).
This means that the instance successfully completed the OnPrepareBackup phase, but was abandoned after that (without any further calls into the Exchange VSS Writer). The instance has been reclaimed.' and that is all.
F: is my backup destination.
I have performed an uninstall and reinstall of Windows Server Backup, via the Server Manager console, doing a restart inbetween.
If i use Windows Server Backup to backup only certain parts of the server, such as Bare Metal Recovery, System State, or C:, the backup works fine. Only when i select D:, either exclusively or as part of a full backup, is when the backup fails with the above
errors.
I know that there is a Sql Server VSS Writer on this server, however there is no SQL Server installed, only some files such as C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Shared\sqlwriter.exe

A bit more history: We were using Windows Server Backup to backup the server for awhile, until we decided to try Symantec BackupExec 2012 for a week. The server we had this running on was too slow, so we switched back to Windows Server Backup (on Sunday 5th
Aug) where I uninstalled the Symantec Agent. Ever since Windows Server Backup hasn't worked. Not sure if this is coincidence or not.
Hope someone can help! Any questions are welcome!
