Software to convert either EDB or BKF files to PST, MSG or EML files...

0
0

We are currently running Exchange 2010 on Server 2008 servers which we back up with Symantec Backup Exec. Over the last few years, we've upgraded Exchange several times (from 5.5 to 2010) and have always used Backup Exec as the backup solution. At the end of every year, we run a full backup that we then store indefintely. Recently, after upgrading from Exchange 2007 to 2010 and then subsequently upgrading Backup Exec from 12.5 to 2010 R2, we received a request from a user to recover several emails that had been backed up under the older versions of Exchange and Backup Exec. We then discovered that Backup Exec (apparently) is unable to do granular restores from legacy versions. We've now decided that a good way to move forward would be to find software that could extract/convert data directly from either the BKF file that Backup Exec generates or from an EDB database file backup. Using this method, we could simlply run an end-of-year backup that only backs up the database files (EDB) and, if the need arises, use the software to extract messages from that to either a PST (which could then be re-imported to the users mailbox) or to message files that could be placed into the users mailbox. Does anyone have any recommendations for this type of software? Have done numerous searches but some of the results look a bit dodgy. Any suggestions gladly appreciated. Thanks,

Adam

Outlook keeps prompting for password

This is a weird situation.  User logs in to domain without issues and is able to access outlook.  However, during the middle of the day,  outlook keeps prompting user for authentication or password.

Profile has been re-created.  ESSO cache was cleared, but still the same thing. Created separate email profile for other email accounts she access, but same issue still occurs.

Has anyone seen this issue and what resolution have you used.

Exchange Management Tools, RSAT, and Windows 7 SP1

I have a brand new computer with Windows 7 Professional. the first thing I did was install all updates to include SP1. When I attempted to install RSAT, I found I could not because of SP1 (someone forgot to do some testing). I then un-installed SP1 and installed RSAT. It installed successfully, but I then attempted to install Exchange 2010 SP1 management tools adn received the following error.

I then attempted to install both the IIS Web Management Tools and the Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5.1 from the "Turn Windows features on or off" dialog box. It failed on each attempt. I then installed SP1 and was able to add these features, however I still get the error above when attempting to install the Exchange 2010 SP1 management tools.

Am I missing something or is this a symtom of the previous issues with the RSAT installation? How can I fix this.

Connecting a disconnected archive to a mailbox other than primary

0

We had an issue with the server that was hosting our archive databases. While we were getting it corrected, all of the archive mailboxes were disconnected from the primary mailboxes and new archives were created. The problem with the server was corrected, and I have been in the process of reconnecting the disconnected archives back to the primary mailbox. The problem we are running in to is that everyone is now missing 2 - 4 weeks of archived e-mail that is in the new archives that was created. We have to be able to access this e-mail for legal purposes. I have upped the retention period for holding on to those disconnected archives, so we don't lose them after 30 days. I'm wondering if there is a way to connect these disconnected archives to a different mailbox, so that this e-mail can be retained. I tried connecting the disabled archive to a mailbox other than the primary user using the following shell command

[PS] C:\Windows\system32>Connect-Mailbox -Identity "815ad6d6-2ee4-4c77-9c14-d0bfb696da37" -Archive -User "Archive Retent
ion" -Database "Archive1"

but found out that the guid of both archive mailboxes are the same. Anybody have any ideas how I can connect a disconnected archive to a user other than the primary user? I hope this hasn't been to confusing. I'll try to sum up here:

1. Archives got disconnected

2. New archives got created

3. Now in the process of reconnecting archives from number 1 to primary mailbox

4. There are now e-mails in the new archives from number 2 that need to be accessed

5. Trying to figure out how to connect the disconnected archives from number 2 to a different mailbox in order to access and retain the e-mails.

Thanks.

James

P.S.

I did find this article -- http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb232039.aspx -- that suggests that connecting an archived mailbox to a mailbox other than the primary is not possible. So, maybe I'm looking for suggestions of how I can access the e-mail from these disconnected archives.

SMTP Application Emails going to Junk Folder in Outlook

0

We have an online job application submission system that uses a dummy email address over SMTP to send applicants confirmation emails (donotreply@domainname.com). Our internal Outlook clients are seeing that email going into their Junk Email folder and I would like to change that behavior. What is the best practice for allowing this address on a domain wide level? Transport rules?  Group Policy with a specified text file of approved senders?

Also, since the sending address is a dummy donotreply address would it make sense to change its sending account name to one that simulates an address in our domain?  Would it then get treated like internal mail?

DAG - Copy Status - Service Down

Odd problem on a soon to be production 2010 DAG environment.

3 node DAG, 2 in primary site on same subnet, 1 in DR site. No dedicated replication network as yet.

When looking at database copy status in EMC I see copy status as Mounted or Healthy for the node I am on but both other nodes are listed as Service Down. It can also take a LONG time for the status to be displayed.

If I run Test-ReplicationHealth for the local node it checks out perfectly.

If I run it with Test-ReplicationHealth -Identity OtherNode I get the following:-

If I suspend the copy then resume it will usually re-appear but will then fail again later on. Although half the time it will fail to suspend the copy since it says it can't contact the remote node.

Makes me somewhat unconfident about auto-failover.

There have been no changes to the AD environment but we have just installed a similar set of Exchange servers in a completely different site over a slow WAN link.

Anybody got any thoughts?

Thanks

Neill

Converting Exchange fixed VHD to dynamic expanding

0

Hi,

I want to convert a fixed VHD (Hyper-V 2008 R2) to dynamically expanding in Hyper-V so I can reduce its size. Its sole purpose is Exchange 2010 SP3 logs.

Is there any concern about the functionality of Exchange after doing so? I am well aware about the difference in performance on Fixed and Dynamically Expanding VHDs, thats not a concern, I just need to know that the conversion wont corrupt the Exchange logs or anything like that.

Thanks.

shell command export only certain folders

Are there any shell commands that can export a copy of only specific folders from a users mailbox, as opposed the whole thing. Namely the deleted items folder in the root of the mailbox, and also the "recover deleted items" folder which in Outlook 2010 you get to through folder > recover deleted items. Is this possible? If so can you provide example syntax to write this out to PST.

Exchange 2010 Active Sync log location.

I'm trying to follow the steps from technet below to export MS Active sync log and i'm unable to locate the File Name from location " "c:\Windows\System32\LogFiles\W2SVC1\ex060809.log" looking at example 1:

Export-ActiveSyncLog :

I ahve also enabled Active sync diagnostic logging to Expert/Maximum from Ex2010 Mgmt. console and still this log folder doesn't get created.
Any advice where i can find this ? Or in Exchange 2010 svr, where is the log file location for -Filename in syntax.
Your help is much appreciated.

Backing up Exch 2010

Hi All,

I have just discovered the backup team is running 2 backups on each of the Exch 2010 SP3 Servers at the same time. A flat file backup and a database integration backup.

I assume this is not a normal practice. Does a intergration backup suffice when you want to restore Exch 2010 Sp3 (MB, CAS and HT) or do you need a flat file backup of some sort? If so, which drives on the server? Maybe the C:\ drive and the config of the server?

Thanks for your help

Automatic Silent/invisible BCCs

I would like to monitor an email account that we are creating for a temporary intern. The goal is to have a copy of all sent items BCC'ed to a specific email without the intern knowing and without being affected by the intern possibly sending a message and then immediately deleting it from "Sent Items". Is this possible without 3rd party tools?

Otlook 365 ProPlus - disconnected

Hi. We are using Exchange 2010 SP3. It is located at an external provider. All works good, but...

Today my Outlook 365 ProPlus wrote me that he is disconnected. I tried repair mailbox - successful. But still disconnected.
Then i reinstall Office ProPlus >_< and now i try add my emailbox to Outlook. It asks me about my Login and Password. After third attempt it says "successful, restart your Outlook". After restarting Outlook said me - The connection to Microsoft Exchange is unavailable.

In logs of my PC i see error 36888:

A fatal alert was generated and sent to the remote endpoint. This may result in termination of the connection. The TLS protocol defined fatal error code is 10. The Windows SChannel error state is 10.

If i connect from another computer in office with my account - it works. From Mobile - it works.

Doesn't work only on my working PC. Nobody in office has this problem.... How i can fix it? Thank You!

Outlook 2013 randomly displays/removes Unread Message count

0

I was redirected here from the Outlook forum based on the fact this is happening with a client machine that has an Exchange account on it.  I'm almost certain the issue is not with Exchange but with Outlook.

I know this is going to sound similar to other questions asked, but I have an issue that seems to be the opposite.  This is happening on my company founders machine.  Windows 8 with Office 2013.  Everything was working fine until a recent update (from his reports).  Now when he has Outlook open sometimes the unread message count randomly disappears.  I haven't been able to do a lot of testing as he only gives me a few minutes at a time on his machine (he's a busy guy, running the company and all).

I found that if I highlighted one of the Inbox sub folders, the count comes back.  Weird.

I tried running Outlook.exe /cleanviews.  What I noticed was when Outlook opens the count is there but then instantly disappeared as the mailbox was loading.  When I opened it again normally with no switches, the count was there.  It has come and gone on its own before without any interaction from me so I'm not convinced the problem has gone away.

Any one else ever see this?  Any known permanent fixes?  Any idea what update might have effected this?

Exchange 2010 Receive Connector intermittently getting an SMTP RSET from sending SMTP servers causing missing user email

0
0

Users are receiving about 95% of their messages from sending SMTP servers. Intermittently, sending SMTP servers send the Exchange 2010 Server a SMTP RSET command for no apparent reason. The RSET Command (by SMTP specification) causes the Exchange 2010 Server to drop the message. The sending SMTP servers then do not resend the message after asking the Exchange server to drop the message. This means the message is marked as Sent by the sending servers but the dropped messages never show up in the users' Outlook inbox.
