Exchange 2010 Size Concerns

0
0

We have one Exchange 2010 server with one mailbox database.  The database is currently 750GB and grows on average around 2-3 GB per weekday.  At what  point do we start to worry about the size affecting the performance and will there be a point where one Exchange server is not enough?  We have no retention policies.  I am trying to sell management on an archiving solution.

Thanks,

Unable to mount database after a Setup /m:recoverserver exchange 2010

Hi all,

Here is the situation, I have a coexistence environment (2003 & 2010) I had to recover our exchange 2010, fortunately none of my users mailboxes were sitting on it since it was just installed couple days before. nevertheless the HD crashed and I just had to reinstall exchange on the same server using our media  (Setup /m:recoverserver). it went through all the steps COMPLETED no error.

Now when I open EMC I can see under Organization Configuration (Mailbox database 010101 and Public folder database 010101) but they are both dismounted.

when I tried to mount the mailbox database I go this:

a window pop up with this message:

"At least one of this store's database files is missing. Mounting this store will force the creation of an empty database. Do not take this action if you intend to restore an earlier backup. Are you sure you want to continue?"

I clicked Yes and then I get this:

Error:

Couldn't mount the database that you specified. Specified database: Mailbox
Database xxxx; Error code: An Active Manager operation failed with a transient
error. Please retry the operation. Error: Database action failed with transient
error. Error: A transient error occurred during a database operation. Error: An
error occurred while preparing to mount database 'Mailbox Database xxxx '.
Error: An I/O error occurred while attempting to enumerate log files. Error 0x3
(The system cannot find the path specified) from Windows API 'FindFirstFile'.
[Database: Mailbox Database xxxx , Server: mailserver.contoso.com

I checked under 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V14\Mailbox\  there is no database, only 2 folders (Address and MDBTEMP)  MDBTEMP is actually empty).

since everybody still under 2003 database, that was not a big issue, but how can I get this resolved?

it seems to me, exchange can see the databases but they are not physically present.

I also Checked with adsiedit if there's a exchange server with that name installed and the databases. and YES there are both showing.

Help.

Thanks,

Private flag

Folks

I share my calendar with persons A and B in my organization. Now, if I send out a meeting invite to C but forget to set the private flag, can I go back to my calendar, right click on the invite and click on Private and expect it to be hidden from A and B. I also assume that it will only show private in my calendar but not in C's calendar. I don't have access to an Exchange server but does someone mind performing this quick test for me?

Thanks

Upgrading domain controller from Server 2003 to Server 2012 R2, how will this affect Exchange 2010?

Hi All,

Below is an AD and Server related post that I had submitted last week. While I did receive valid responses for the post, I was advised to check with the Exchange forums for the Exchange related  question inbold. All responses are welcomed, thank you!

===========================================================

Hi All,

I am hoping that someone could perhaps provide some insight on this topic as I apparently can't seem to google the best answer.

I have recently acquired an AD domain that is running on a 2003 domain controller. I have been tasked with upgrading our existing domain structure with 2012 R2 domain controllers for our main office and remote offices.

The domain name is company.mynetwork.com, and it is the default first site name. We have multiple offices throughout the US with their own domain controllers (i.e. FL.mynetwork.com, NY.mynetwork.com, DC.mynetwork.com, etc.).

Our main office, and default first site has one domain controller (mynetdc1) running Server 2003 R2. It is also our only DNS server for the main office. It also has an additional domain controller called mynetmaster3 which is running Server 2003.

Both mynetdc1 & mynetmaster3 NTDS settings show them as global catalogs under AD Sites & Services. Both servers are also in the AD Domain Controllers OU, along with all of the other satellite office domain controllers.

Additionally, our main office is running Exchange 2010 with the latest service pack. My questions are:

  • Can we demote and retire mynetmaster3, then replace mynetdc1 with a newly promoted 2012 R2 global catalog domain controller without harming anything in the domain tree and interrupting connectivity to the other offices (this of course goes without saying after a 4 hour maintenance window to get the task completed has passed)?
  • Should we upgrade the satellite offices first after raising the functional level for mynetdc1, or should we do the opposite (upgrade main office, then satellite offices)?
  • MS Exchange 2010 is heavily dependent on AD, what effect will this entire project have on our email server? What steps should we take beforehand to ensure email continuity?
  • Finally, is there any shame for a Net Admin to suggest that we hire an implementation specialist for this task? :)

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Reboot Exchange 2013 DAG Member Server and Cluster Name Goes offline.

Hello, I have Server 2012 with Exchange 2013 installed. When I reboot the nodes in the Exchange 2013 DAG (one at a time), the DAG Cluster Name will go offline as well as the IP address.  When I attempt to bring it online manually I get the following:

"Cluster IP address resource 'Cluster IP Address' cannot be brought online because the cluster network 'Cluster Network 2' is not configured to allow client access. Please use the Failover Cluster Manager snap-in to check the configured properties of the cluster network."

If I click properties and say allow client access, I get the following popup and the settings do not save:

The network is now available for clients to connect to the clustered roles in the cluster.  However, before this can happen, the client access point for the clustered roles needs to be updated with new IP Addresses for this network.

Anyone else have an issue with the DAG network when you reboot?  If I remove the DAG and recreate it, all works fine until the next reboot.  At the moment we only have a few people on it while we test this out, but I need to get this corrected prior to moving my entire company.

Exchange 2010 SP3 CU 6 - Troubleshooting Assistant - System Context Switches/sec above threshold

When Running the Exchange Performance Troubleshooter we are getting a processor bottleneck - System Context Switches/sec above threshold of 34,000 over the threshold of 20,000. Real time Perfmon counters confirm the value and Dual CPU's Intel E5 2670 2.6 GHZ  are under 5% utilized.

The help link refers you to an old link from 2006 and refers to Exchange 2003. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa995907(v=EXCHG.80).aspx Could this be a false positive?

AvailableNewMailboxSpace - need powershell hint

Hi there:

We are using this command to collect how much space does Exchange database has:

Get-MailboxDatabase -Status | select ServerName,Name,DatabaseSize,AvailableNewMailboxSpace >C:\how-much-space-left-for-exchange-databases.txt

And the idea is to get the SUM of numbers in the 3rd column and put it into file.

Is it possible and how to?

with best regards,

Mailbox Content Report - Exchange 2010 SP1

0
0

Hello,

A colleague came to me today with a request for a report to be generated against a shared mailbox his teams uses.

Basically he wants a report in .csv format of all the email contained within the inbox and subfolders, so that he can perform an analysis of the emails, and list them in a spreadsheet with the following headings "From, Subject, Received, Size"

The first place I looked was the "Get-MailboxFolderStatistics" within EMS, but soon found that this cmdlet would only give me folder stats - obviously, but I'm struggling to see where I could get the information required -i.e. go a level deeper and report on mailbox content.

The only feasible way I can find of getting the report he requires is to export the mailbox contents to csv, folder by folder, using Outlook 2010's Import/Export function.

Any help you give on this query would be greatly appreciated

Many Thanks

Matt

Exchange 2010 global address list not updating

0

GAL is not updating unless updated manually, I add new users, hide an inactive user from exchange address lists, or modify (change username for user) wait 24 hrs and longer and address book in all modes, OWA, cached/uncached does not reflect the changes. If I manually do the following procedure the gal updates, but next time I make a change in the GAL same problem happens.

step 1: Update the global address list
setp 2: run the following command in EMS->  get-mailbox | set-mailbox -applymandatoryproperties
step 3: restart the system attendant service
step 4: Update the offline address Book
step 5: restart the exchange file distribution service
step 6: download offline address book without "download changes since last send/receive"

This used to work correctly and the only thing I can think of that may be the cause is I setup HTTP Redirect at one point to troubleshoot something and then unsetup the redirect and deleted the web.config the http redirect created.

Any help would be appreciated.

simply retention policy to keep mail in mailboxes 90 days then move to archive...how?

Hello All,

We are running Exchange 2010 Ent SP2 on Windows 2008 R2 SP1. We are an Enterprise Agreement Client so all users are running Office 2010 Pro Plus, so online archiving is available to us.  We would like to implement some very simple retention policies. Basically we want to keep everything in their mailbox for 90 days then move it to their archive. Sounds pretty simple, obviously  too complicated for me. To make it even easier we do want to allow users to set personal tags. That’s right everyone, initially will get the same policy applied.

I have read many links like http://blogs.technet.com/b/ianhamer/archive/2009/12/04/curious-about-exchange-2010-retention-policies.aspx and this one http://exclusivelyexchange.com/exchange-2010-retention-policies/ and am no closer to understand what I am doing. Can someone recommend another links(s) so I can read more.  I do not think we are being that complicated, guess I need a few more pointers.

TIA

Jim

Exchange 2010 SP1- GAL missing "Mail User" entries after users migrated to O365

0
0

We are in the testing stages of migrating from EX2010SP1 on-prem to O365.

The first test users have been migrated.  They show up in the EMC under Mail Contact as "Mail User".  Other users still on-prem cannot find the migrated users in the GAL now.

Doing a get-globaladdresslist shows a blank recipientfilter.

I tried exporting the GAL but since the recipient filter is null it would not export.

The "Hide from address list" box is unchecked on all of these accounts.

Any ideas?  Thanks.

OAB download problem in Outlook 2010

0

Hi everyone!

In our organization. we have both Windows XP and Windows 7 clients.  It turns out that the XP clients with Outlook 2010 have problems downloading the OAB. When I force a OAB download, nothing happens. It just hangs and will do like forever. The Windows 7 computers however, handles this without any problems. The OAB download works perfectly. The OAB distribution is web-based.

Any solution for this?

How can I determine the current value of the RecoverableItemsWarningQuota and RecoverableItemsQuota settings for a user?

I know I can set them with a command like this:

Set-Mailbox "Mailbox User" -RecoverableItemsWarningQuota 40GB -RecoverableItemsQuota 50GB

but how can I find what they are now?

Message forwarding to external contacts

UserA@domain1.com sends a message toUserB@domain2.com

UserB@domain2.com had a forward set up which forwards the emails toUserB@domain1.com mailbox.

UserB@domain2.com mailbox is set to only forward emails and do not deliver to the mailbox.

UserB@domain1.com is complaining that s/he is not receiving emails fromUserA@domain1.com .

The exchange tracking shows that the messages were received byUserA@domain1.com for UserB@domain2.com but then it doesn’t show that they were SEND to UserB@domain1.com

Thoughts???? Hope I made myself clearJ

Calendar issues with Office 2010 and Exchange 2010

A manager has a delegate. The delegate has "send on behalf of" privileges, and EDITOR permissions on the Manager's calendar.

Delegate sent out a meeting request on behalf of the manager. The delegate has all the details of the meeting in her calendar, while the Manager has a meeting in the same time slot, but only has "BLOCK" in the details. Nothing else.

The manager needs to see the details (it's her meeting). But I'm not sure how to go about fixing this problem.

exchange 2010 OAB not updating global address list

Dear all,

We migrated from exchange 2003 to 2010. We have 1 mailbox server and 1 hub&cas server. All clients are MS outlook 2010. We created a new offline address book and enabled web distribution for it. Mailbox server is generating the OAB and CAS server is downloading the OAB and clients are able to download OAB from CAS server. The problem is when we create a new mailbox user, contact or any updation to existing user, it  not updating the global address list in OAB. But from OWA and outlook without cache mode we are able to see the updation.

Please help me.
