Coexistence Exch2k7 >>> Exch2k10 - Mobile issues during migration

$

Hi,

we have 02 servers running Exch2k7, one for CAS and another for HUB/MBX, the third server is running CAS/HUB for Exch2k10; I also reviewed URLs for Outlook Anywhere, ActiveSync and etc. The old servers are using URLs pointing to legacy.domain.com.br and the new server is pointing to webmail.domain.com.br.

The outlook is running fine since users already received alerts about MS Outlook asking to replace the HTTPS from https://webmail.domain.com.br to https://legacy.domain.com.br.

My big issue is related with mobile users. Talking about DNS, mobile users today are pointing to webmail.domain.com.br which is pointing to the OLD CAS external IP address and works fine. I have only one new user hosted by the new server since we ADDED the MBX role to it few days ago. During the tests, I changed the DNS for 'webmail' in a way to point to the NEW CAS external IP address and if the user which is hosted on the OLD MBX server tries to log-in then the browser redirects fine to https://legacy.domain.com.br. If the user belongs to the new server, works fine using OWA 2010 interface.

OWA and Outlook is working fine.

Mobile users which are current pointed to webmail.domain.com.br and hosted by the OLD MBX server, they stop to work when we change the DNS from OLD to the NEW CAS external ip address; so after some complains we need put the 'webmail' DNS entry pointing back to the OLD CAS external IP address.

>>> That behavior for mobiles is expected?? I was expecting the mobiles change automatically from 'webmail.domain.com.br' to 'legacy.domain.com.br' as outlook does.

* the SSL certificate on the OLD CAS is running for these names: 'legacy.domain.com.br, autodiscover.domain.com.br and webmail.domain.com.br'.

* the SSL certificate on the NEW CAS is running for these names: 'webmail.domain.com.br and autodiscover.domain.com.br'.

best practice to control db growth

Exchange 2010 sp3, mb01, mb02, hub01, hub02. plus an offsite cas/hub/mb server. all running on VM.

i'm noting down the disk usage starting yesterday and the database disk consumes 10GB for the last 24 hours. i'm not sure if that can be taken as a pattern but to me it is a huge jump. so I started investigating on ways to trim the database sizes and I've to archiving.

i'm planning to configure an archive server and place my users' emails there that are older than 12 months. seems an easy enough task. I've got a VM just for that archive server.

any thoughts? seems the next best thing to control db growth imho.

Message Tracking - Determing what happens to specific email

Good afternoon all!  I have a situation with a client Exchange 2010 server.  They have a front end/back end exchange setup.  They are running this on Server 2008 R2.  Mail is setup and working great.  They have ONE specific email they receive on a nightly basis.  This email makes it through the front end spam solution, then passes the receive connector.  In the message tracking logs I see the message is received.  It is sent to a distribution group.  Other email that is sent to the distribution group will have a corresponding expand and deliver logs.  This particular email does not have anything further than receive.  No other logs to identify why it is not being delivered or dropped or anything.  I have run the following command to ensure I have the full information:

[PS] C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V14\Scripts>get-exchangeserver | where {$_.isHubTransportServer -eq $tru
e -or $_.isMailboxServer -eq $true} | Get-MessageTrackinglog -MessageId "JD0xIkOsn00024d06@mail.es.netteller.com" | fl

I am lost on where to figure out what happens to this email after the receive connector gets it.  Messages normally have other messages that show additional information; however this message just dies there.

Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated!

Slow attachment upload with Exchange Web Services (Outlook 2011 for Mac?)

$

We're experiencing slow attachment upload with Exchange Web Services versus MAPI, OWA, and Outlook Anywhere.  I'm not totally certain that it is Exchange Web Services or specifically Outlook 2011 for Mac.  I attempted to test with the Mac Mail App, but it makes it difficult to tell when the attachment has been uploaded and the file has been sent.  Here's what we're seeing (10mb file):

MAPI / RPC/HTTPS / OWA: 10-15 seconds upload time

Exchange Web Services (Outlook 2011 for Mac): 60-90 seconds upload time

Thoughts? Any idea why we would see such a drastic difference in attachment upload time?  Any way to prove definitively that it is Exchange Web Services vs. Outlook 2011 for Mac?  We've tried it from multiple locations with multiple different machines, and although the upload times vary (some locations have more bandwidth etc) the ratios remain similar.

Exchange 2010 Export Mailbox to PST using only .EDB file

I have Exchange 2010 SP2 Update Rollup 4, SBS 2011 (which is similar to Server 2008 R2). I have recently recovered from a server crash due to a faulty RAID controller and need to recover some e-mail (and possibly contacts) from a couple of mailboxes.

My main concern is that my old .edb file is in a old forest that is different than my current forest. Due to the length of the old internal domain name having more than 15 characters (I previously migrated using a answer file) and my current internal domain name is 15 characters.local they are different.

I also dont have the log files or STM file

With the two internal domain names being different will I still be able to follow this related topic:

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/zh/exchange2010/thread/8f4eb425-72ff-4d18-abfc-5c00be7113e2

If not please let me know which direction I should be going. I know there are third part tools that can get this done but not in the budget right now.

Is it possible to allow the members of a distribution group to be the only ones permitted to send to the distribution group? I've read up on this and I think it's possible with a custom RBAC role. Any other ideas?

Change StaticDomainControllers in Exchange 2010 without using EMC nor EMS

Hello experts,

I have used this command to change default DC used by Exchange:

SetExchangeServer -StaticDomainControllers "NewDC.ourdomain.com"
SetExchangeServer -StaticGlobalCatalogs "NewDC.ourdomain.com"

Unfortunately after doing that, neither EMC nor EMS are able to open.

Any urgent help please? How to change those two settings back to their null default value?

Exchange 2010 UM was not delivering voicemails, deleted them.

Hi, recently (last 2 weeks or so) our Unified Messaging has been sometimes taking a day to deliver voicemails to our inboxes, and showing missed calls in Lync.

I checked in the D:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V14\UnifiedMessaging\voicemail folder and there were maybe 12 voicemails with matching .txt files.

Thinking there was a problem with the Unified Messaging service communicating via Hub Transport, I restarted the UM service, and it DELETED all the voicemails in the folder. They never got delivered to our inboxes.

This is the error that was repeated many times, informing it had niceley deleted the voicemail.

MSExchangeUnifiedMessaging Event ID 1335 UMService

The Unified Messaging server encountered an error while trying to process the message with header file "D:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V14\UnifiedMessaging\voicemail\0178a2fa-73c1-4496-befa-6fc62268ea62.txt". The message will be deleted and the "MSExchangeUMAvailability: % of Messages Successfully Processed Over the Last Hour" performance counter will be decreased. Error details: "Microsoft.Exchange.UM.UMCore.ReachMaxProcessedTimesException: This message has reached the maximum processed count,"5".

Then I get this error:

The Unified Messaging server encountered an error while trying to process the message with header file "D:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V14\UnifiedMessaging\voicemail\7b2b0c02-d394-4ab1-9839-ecab543a116c.txt". Error details: "Microsoft.Exchange.UM.UMCore.SmtpSubmissionException: Submission to the Hub Transport server failed. The operation will be retried. ---> Microsoft.Exchange.Net.ExSmtpClient.UnexpectedSmtpServerResponseException: Unexpected SMTP server response. Expected: 220, actual: 421, whole response: 421 4.3.2 Service not available

WHY did it do this? There were several large voicemails in there, possibly with important information, that is now lost.

How can we recover the lost voicemails, and prevent this happening again?

Also, about UM not delivering voicemails, I have done this testing from the Excahgen server itself. If I "telnet 192.168.1.12 25" I get 220 ESMTP response and can send mail. But if I

"telnet localhost 25" or "telnet exchange.domain.local" I get:

421 4.3.2 Service not available

Same SMTP entry in two domains that are in the same forest

Hello!

I work in an evironment that has multiple domains in a forest. The enivorment is huge cosisting of over 60000 users between all the domains. Now for my question, I have come across user email accounts that have smtp entries set totest.user@d1.contosso.com as their primary smtp entries in the "d1.contosso.com" domain, in my other domain "d2.contosso.com" the same user has a user account and a mailbox with the same SMTP entry test.user@d1.contosso.com as the primary but it also has a secondary entry oftest.user@d2.contosso.com. Users that have entries like these use the "d2" domain  for primary email and domain log in and I don't have rights to delete the accounts or SMTP entires in the other domain. Can having the same SMTP entries in two different mailboxes cause conflicts if the two mailboxes exist in the same forest but different domains? I've been told that it shouldn't but I would like the input of seasoned Exchange and AD techs. Thank you!

Exchange 2010 Google Apps Split Delivery

$

The situation I'm facing is a little confusing. Our organization has Exchange 2010 email accounts in place for all staff with an address scheme ofjsmith@mydomain.com.  We recently signed up for Google Apps and are using the same domain name for those accounts as well. These accounts are for our students with the address scheme of John.Smith@mydomain.com.

With using the same domain name we are looking to a split delivery solution I’m assuming to make this work. In theory what we are looking for would be that if an email is sent to a recipient at mydomain.com it would come through our Exchange server. It would look for the intended email account.  If it were for a staff member an account would be present and the mail would stop there. However if it were for a student it would not find the account and then pass through to Google’s servers by way of a send receiver.

I have set up the send receivers according to the documentation from the following website:

http://community.spiceworks.com/how_to/show/38537-ms-exchange-and-google-apps-split-delivery-for-single-domain-name-k-12-school-sample-shown

These steps include-

  1.  Setting the accepted domain from “Authoritative” to “Internal Relay”
  2. Setting up a send connector to point to Google’s servers with a cost of 1 to make it priority. Since we currently have a send connector setup to route email out through our spam filter, that would go to a cost of 2.

The issue seems to be that when the send connector that is pushing the mail to Google’s servers is set to a cost of 1, giving it priority, it then creates a send loop for the staff members sending email from Exchange.

The Google student accounts do not receive any mail from outside without a send connector in place to tell the emails to go to the Google servers to look for those accounts since our MX records point to our spam filter.  I know I have read multiple place that it would be easier to have the MX records point to Google for the domain and then set up routing on that end to push email to unknown accounts to our Exchange server, however we would like to route it the opposite of that.

Please let me know if I have overlooked anything, however at this point I’m stumped. Thank you for your time.

Hello , I think the below event alert 4113 is very common and is due to that only one database copy is present in DAG but is there any way we can stop this alert for thespecific database.

The message tells that there is only one copy of the database - create another copy and the warning message will go away butwe do not want to create another copy. So is there any way we can stop this event getting generated.

Exchange 2010 Retention Policy - Emails that are Tasks

$

We are getting ready to do a 90 Day Retention Policy against all email folders within Outlook. I have tested on a couple of systems and is working correctly. My question is this: If a user flags an email as a task, and does not act on that task within 90 days, the task will be removed due to the 90 day retention policy. Is there a way around this?

Here is the information that users are doing: https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Create-tasks-and-to-do-items-45a94e7b-a4ee-46ea-9823-c3423c0eab8e#bm3

Outlook 2010 shared mailbox in cache mode not updating Inbox automatically

$

I have a user who has XP on his desktop, running Outlook 2010, connecting to a Exchange 2010 w/SP2.  I recently added a shared mailbox for him to monitor. I did it the old way by adding additional mailbox to his client (outlook 2010) pc.. I understand now  that in 2010 SP1 or greater that you can simply do this from the exchange server by granting full access permissions.  Either way, the user sees the mailbox and gets email in the shared mailbox ONLY when he clicks on the inbox and clicks on Update Folder. For some reason it is not auto updating new email. His personal account works fine, meaning when a new email is received it comes in and you see new mail.  The account is in cache mode and I've looked at other shared mailboxs that are working fine and the settings look the same? I'm not sure why this shared mailbox is not updating?

Exchange 2010 DAG, setting multiple members into maintenace mode

Hello,

I have a 3 node DAG and I am looking into doing some maintenance, is it possible to set 2 of the 3 nodes into maintenance mode? or can maintenance mode only be set one node at a time? I have the activation preference set so that if the first 2 nodes (the ones being set into maintenance) fail to have all DB's failover to the 3 node. if this is possible, is there a time frame or limit on how long an Exchange server should be in maintenance mode? I need to have them in maintenance for at least 24 hours.

A second question I'd like to ask, what is the proper method to fail all Databases from one node to another? Aside from going to each Database individually and using the "Activate database copy" wizard. As far as I can tell the maintenance mode script moves all the database to their next node preference (Assuming its available).

Thanks,

Moving Exchange from on premise to datacentre

Hi,

Next week we will be moving our Exchange server out to a data centre, the goal being that if we lose connection to our office our remote staff will continue to be able to use email. With that being said I plan to setup a domain controller in the DC as well so that Exchange can continue to process requests when our main office is offline.

The question I have is what roles does the domain controller need in the DC to allow Exchange to function, I'm assuming it needs to be a global catolg server but not sure if any other FSMO roles are needed

The plan

1x Exchange 2010 Server

1x Domain Controller (AD, DNS, DHCP, Global Catalog)

Hi!

We have installed a third party software to add signatures to our mails.
Now we have a problem that causing our mails to queue several times a day
on the server (they stay in the queue from 10 to 40 minutes) and then they automatically gets
released from the queue.

In the link a have attached the events from the eventlog that occurs when
the error appears.

We are running Exchange 2010 SP3 UR7 on Windows 2008 R2

Exchange 2010 Database Not Fully Restored

$

I performed the following steps to back up and restore our Exchange 2010 database:

1. Ran backup of Mailbox folder (containing .edb file) and log folder (containing E00...*. files) using Windows Server Backup utility to USB drive.

2. Restored files to new server using Windows Server Backup utility.

3. Determined database was in a dirty shutdown state with eseutil.

4. Repaired database with eseutil /r (it said operation completed successfully)

5. Verified database was now in a clean shutdown state.

6. Ran NewMailboxDatabase command via the Exchange Shell.

7. Mounted the database in the EMC, which succeeded.

However, when I look at the "disconnected" mailboxes, I only see 3 mailboxes.  There should be over 100.  I verified the size of the database is correct, so I'm not sure why only 3 mailboxes are showing.

Any ideas?

Have tried moving with the GUI and Shell
