Multi-Mailbox Search, Estimates, Searches fail

I'm testing out Discovery (thankfully not using it in anger!) and am unable to get searches or estimates to work on my 2k8R2, Exchange 2010 Version 14.2 (Build 247.5) box.

I've started the Microsoft Search service (it was previously disabled), then restarted the Exchange Store service (and indeed, the whole server) and then searched in OWA/ECP but despite searching for a reasonably tight keyword and date match from only one mailbox, I continually get an error, as detailed below.

I've read that with non-enterprise licenses I can't search multiple mailboxes but can't figure out if that means I'm using the wrong search method? Also, I note that Content Index State is marked as Failed for the database. The service Microsoft Exchange Search Indexer is set to Manual and is not started. Are any of these the problem?

Here is the error I get:

An error occurred when searching Username. The message is 'Try
using fewer keywords at the same time, reducing the number of users in
the From, To, Cc, and Bcc fields, and reducing the number of mailboxes
that are searched at the same time. When you use wildcards, make search
queries as specific as possible. For example, if the search query used
short words with one or more wildcards (for example, pat*), a large
number of words or phrases may be returned because all words that start
with "pat" are searched. Search failed on mailbox 'uk\Username\72fd7738-5a84-4b65-8433-9fcb29026245'. '.

Any help gratefully appreciated!

Calum
