Database Log File Best Practices / Microsoft Recommended Configuration

Recently I've had to slightly redesign our DAG to successfully integrate our DAG with Avamar for Exchange 2010.  Avamar requires it's own "DAG" and also requires that database files and log files be stored on separate volumes, I want to be sure I understand the disk requirements for just the log files.  Currently we have five mailbox databases.  The databases and log files are stored on a single volume (per database, five database volumes on each server).  My design adds another volume per mailbox server strictly for log files.

I've read articles that suggest keeping the database files and log files on the same volumes is best practice if you have a high availability design and have also read articles that suggest the opposite.  Can someone clarify?  Preferably with a MS KB.

Quick Overview of Plan:

5 mailbox servers, 5 database volumes on each mailbox server
5 mailbox servers, 1 log file volume on each mailbox server

We've XIV for database storage.  Do we need something this fast for log files or can we create the volumes on something slower?  If so, what's the ideal disk specs for log files?

Any information you can provide would be helpful.  Thanks all!
