Send emails to test domain

Hello all,

I'm not sure if anyone can give me any feedback on this. 

We have set up a test domain that's isolated from our production network. How can I send emails from my machine (3rd party application) to our test environment? Do I need to add a mx record in our production to our test domain? Use an smtp server?

We want to send the emails without going through our production environment.
