This may be a strange one, but all the posts I have seen have bee about the other way around. Our 2010 server at present is holding all the cards as far as mail routing, and all of themail related features are working perfectly. Ex2010--->Ex2003 for all inbound mail is fine. Outbound uses the SMTP hosts configured on each. The 2003 server does NOT have a smarthost configured anymore- this is now with the 2010 server as its 'gateway' I guess you'd call it.
Anyway- public folders. After a few issues (invalid characters) on the 2003 side, all my folders have been replicated to my new 2010 server. However, any NEW changes made from a 2010 side, be it mail enabled folders or just a post in a NON mail enabled folder do NOT make their way to the 2003 side. Posts on the 2003 side work just super and duplicate to the 2010 side.
Whilst I appreciate that my setup IS for a small amount of time (2 months), I DO have some stakeholders that are in need of talking both ways so to speak. Plus...I'd love to get to the bottom of this and see if what I have configured is do-able, when I thought it was!
