Exchange 2010 hosted env migration to a foreing Link Mailbox Exchange 2010 env.

Hi,

I have been recently told that we are going to be moving our Exchange 2010 mailboxes to a different Exchange 2010 env. that is going to be managed by a different team of people.

Our company has 3 sites and and the current Exchange servers are in the main site. The email domain let's say is 123.com

The plan is to create 2 new domains for business reasons not technical reasons. For example
domain1.com and domain2.com and use them as the new email domains.

They said that they will be configuring domain1.com and domain2.com in their Exchange servers and we will be using Link Mailboxes.

Our AD domain is currently named currentdomain.local and the Exchange domain that we are hosting in our servers is ExchangeDomain.com like I said before for business reasons the are going to create 2 new domains  domain1.com and domain2.com which they will be hosted on their servers and then use Link Mailboxes and split the our current mailboxes between the 2 new domains hosted on their servers.

Hopefully I was clear enough with my explanation.

I have some questions:

1.) With Link Mailboxes my understanding is that a new mailbox is created on the new Exchange servers and then the account has to be disabled. How is that going to play with the scenario that I have explained before? In other words what needs to be done in order for us to be able to reach the new Exchange servers from our current AD domain and manage the mailboxes?

2.) Currently there is nothing in between us and their servers but internet. What needs to be done in order to connect to their servers?

3.) How do you migrate the current mailboxes to the link mailboxes?

4.) Once the mailboxes are migrated to the link mailboxes they are going to be reached by a different domain name. Is there a way for us to have email coming to both domains? The current domain and the new one with link mailboxes?

5.) The users are going to be connecting to the new Exchange servers link mailboxes with Outlook Anywhere. Is there anything that we need to be aware?

6.) How does Autoconfigure comes into play with link mailboxes? How do we configure the clients to work with Link Mailboxes? The outlook clients are Outlook 2003 SP3.

I would appreciate if someone with experience on link mailboxes and this type of migration could help me out to understand a little bit this process.

Thank you!
