If I have a default retention policy enabled for a user and I need to disable the policy.  Are there any drawbacks to re-enabling the default policy again for the same user?

Thanks,

When attempting to fix the issue using this cmdlet

get-mailbox -DomainController "IDTDC01.idt.local" -Identity "CN=IDT Support,OU=IDT Users,DC=idt

I get this error:

I also attempt to run this cmdlet:

I get the error in event viewer

so my question is how would i fix my distribution groups to not report this error any more

Japanese DBCS characters are corrupted Exchange 2010

Hi all, in Exchange 2003 and 2010 mixed environment . Recently installed Exchange 2010 and migrated majority of users.

We have received several reports that Japanese character are not displayed correctly when reply or forward message.

I have found MS KB articles 95258 and 2642153.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/952583 (Exchange Server 2007 SP1, Exchange Server 2010, or Exchange Server 2010 SP1 environment)

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2642153 (Exchange Server 2010 SP1 or SP2 environment)

Our Exchange 2010 already has SP2 Ru4v2 applied, but when I open the 'EdgeTransport.exe.config' file,

the line <add key="PreferredInternetCodePageForShiftJIS" value="50220" />does not exist.

As KB2642153 states that this line should be added when you apply Sp2 RU2, I'm confused as to whether to add the line manually as stated in kb952583 which is intended forpre SP2RU2 Exchange2010?

Any help would be much appreciated.

cheers,

Mail Flow issue in multi-HT Environment

$

Hi All,

I have just taken on a customer, for whatever reason (a server failure caused by their previous guy uninstall an Exchange role on a live environment) they have two Servers:

MX1: MBX, HT

MX2: MBX, HT, CAS

There are only 11 users so I want to consolidate everything back to MX1. Upon changing the mail flow to only go through MX1, clients sending mail outbound doesn't work. If I set it back to the previous configuration, all the messages clear and are delivered. They aren't showing up in any queues, what I think is happening is they are trying to deliver to MX1 and then route outbound.

Is there a way to tell which server the clients are trying to send their mail to?

Thanks,

Autoforwarding of Calendar Events has changed under Exchange 2010

In Exchange 2007 my auto forwarding of calendar events to an external address (another Corporate Exchange server) were successfully sent as appearing from the originator.

When my company went to Exchange 2010 this auto forwarding works differently as these calendar events now appear to come from my account on the new 2010 server. As a result the acceptance is returning to me instead of the originator. I can manually forward from this address to the other with the correct result, but I cannot auto forward.

Is this a feature or a bug?

Exchange 2010 Blank Message Content in HTML mails

Hello there.

I run an exchange server 2010 with a windows 2008 R2 and sometime HTML mail that come in AND out have blank message content.

 - I have NO anti-virus on my server

 - My clients computers have avast installed

- "blank message content" happends in outlook 2007 and outlook 2010 and OWA too. But only with HTML mail.

- All my PCs and server are up-to-date

- The is no transport rules. all options are default.

- And finally, it happends randomly (not with each html mail and not with the same sender or recipient) more and more often since early 2010.

I have a mailbox at my provider that cath all mails for my domain and i use a EFS ( aPOP3 connector www.chimera.co.nz ) to download my mail and send them to my exchange server. So I can see my mails correctly on the webmail of my provider before they are been downloaded from my provider.

I don't know what to do. Please, I hope somebody can help me.

Thanks

ps: sorry for my english, i am a french user.

EMC Initialization failure No Exchange Servers are available

I can no longer gain access to our Exchange Management Console 2010 on our 2008 R2 Server.  Has worked fine for the first two weeks.

EMC 2010 Initialization failed.

The following error occured while searching for the on-premises Exchange server:  No Exchange servers are available in any Active Directory sites.  You can't connect to remote Powershell on a computer that only has the Management Tools role installed.  It was running the command 'Discover-ExchangeServer -UseWIA $true -SuppressError $true -CurrentVersion 'Version 14.1 (Build 218.15)".

Any suggestions are appreciated, I cannot find anything regarding this error.

Thank you

How do I add our current Exchange 2010 environment to a new Exchange Server I have built

Hi there,

I wonder could you help me please!

We currently have 2 Exchange 2010 servers setup in a DAG with one CAS array and I have just built a new server and would like it to have access to our Organisation setup in MS Exchange On-Premises in the Exchange Management Console that I have already installed on the new server.

In our other 2 servers we have the following, what I believe to be roles available, but pardon my ignorance if this isn’t correct as I’m new to Exchange admin.

Listed in our On-Premises Management Console (GEX02.SWRC.AC.UK) are: -

Organisation Configuration

Server Configuration

Recipient Configuration

And Toolbox

What I would like to know is how I setup the new server so it can see the current setup. Hopefully as the roles are already installed on the other two active Exchange boxes there will be a way to incorporate this new server into the DAG so all the services that are available on the current servers are available on the new server.

Sorry if I’m not explaining myself correctly but hopefully you will know what I mean!

Thanks and kind regards,

Tony

Exchange 2010: Client Access Servers & Load Balancing

$

6 CA servers - 3 internet facing at one site (Site1), 3 non-internet facing at another site (Site2).

6 Mailbox Servers - 3 at Site1 which host all mailboxes for users at Site1, 3 at Site2 which host all mailboxes at Site2.

All user's accessing mailboxes from outside of our network use the 3 CA servers at Site1, these servers are managed via an F5 appliance.  If a user in Site2 accesses their mailbox outside of our network, they hit one of three internet facing CA servers at Site1 and get redirected to one of the 3 CA servers at Site2.  I realize this is be design in 2010, but here is my question:

How do the CA servers in Site2 load balance traffic coming from the CA Servers in Site1?  Without actually having these servers in the F5 pool or managed via WNLB, it doesn't exactly make sense in my mind.  In my mind, one of the F5 load balanced CA servers in Site1 would proxy that traffic to a single CA server in Site2, which would leave open the possibility for network related problems if that traffic is destined for a single server in Site2.  If I'm incorrect, please help me understand.  Also, can someone provide some guidance how to check/configure/manage this as well?

Public folder connection after move to Exchange 2010

We are migrating mailboxes from Exchange 2007 to 2010. Exchange 2007 still has Public folders, but our Exchange 2010 doesn't. Now I see in see that mailboxes that have been moved to Exchange 2010 still make contact to the old 2007 public folder.

The only way I have been able to fix this so far, is to recreate the Outlook profile on the client pc. Is there another way to fix this? We have thousands of clients, deleting all profiles would be horrible.

ODBC connection not connect automatically and it will drop by itself

We have one financial software requires ODBC connection to logon. Recently, we cannot login with the error message saying "Unable to connect to middle server, please contact your system administrator". After trouble shooting, we have found ODBC connection doesn't connect automatically and we need to confirm the connection established sucessfully through System DSN tab of ODBC Data Source Administrator by clicking the "Test Data Source" button. Once it said "TESTS COMPLETED SUCCESSFULLY!", then we can login. Any clue so that we can fix this without going into ODBC connection manually? Please help!

Mailbox Full Error Message

We have a single Exchange 2010 server.

A month ago a user tried to email another user (Bob) from OWA and received this error message, "This message can't be delivered to because their mailbox is full." We don't have any mailbox quota limits. I ran this commandGet-MailboxStatistics bsmith | fl StorageLimitStatus in EMS and the result wasBelowLimit. After a day it seemed to have fixed itself.

Today a user tried to email Bob from Outlook 2007 and received a similar message (I don't have the exact wording).

I ran the above command again and received the same result - BelowLimit.

What could be causing this problem?

Disconnected and resynchronizing

Hi,

I have a 2 site, 4 exchange server 1 FSW config. 2 Exchange servers at each site and the FSW at the primary site. Each Exchange server is running all roles. Each Exchange server has 2 NIC's, 1 for MAPI traffic and 1 for replication traffic. All setting are to Microsoft best practices.

I am having an issue with replication. 1 of the secondary servers at the secondary site are not able to keep up with the transaction logs on all 4 databases.  The other secondary server is not able to keep up with one of the database transaction log copies. I tried reseeding one of the databases from a local copy and still had issues.

What sort of monitoring could I do to make sure this is not a drive issue?

Certificate for Multi-Role Ex2010 servers

$

Hi everyone. Need some word of wisdom here.

Been dancing around this certificate request...  Seems like every time I have it figured out, there is an ambush.

We have Three multi-role Ex2010 servers in Europe (MBX, CAS, Hub) and will be adding Three multiroles in Canada, Three multiroles in USA, and Three multiroles in Asia in the near future.

I started off trying to make a cert request for all these servers, even though the Canada/USA/Asia ones don't exist yet - just want to cover the bases for the future builds.

I ran the wizard (which listed each server's FQDN), added a few more legacy FQDNs and ended up with 142 SANs.  Asked our Cert Authority to give me a quote for such a cert - almost $10,000 !!!  Ouch!!!

(By the way the wizard also adds short NetBIOS server names to the list of SANs, which will no longer be supported by Cert Authorities after 2014.)

So I Googled like crazy everything I could find about Ex2010 certificates and carried out the following conclusions:

1. I don't need to have the CASArray FQDN on the SAN list - scratch those out

2. Most blogs recommend to change the CAS servers' AutodiscoverServiceInternalUri and InternalUrl from the actual server FQDN to a custom name and make sure that the custom name exist in the internal DNS and points to the load balanced IP address of the CAS servers.  OK, I can run something like this on each Ex2010 server:

Set-ClientAccessServer -Identity PROD1MSEXM10A -AutodiscoverServiceInternalUri https://webmail-eu.child.parent.company.com/autodiscover/autodiscover.xml
Set-AutodiscoverVirtualDirectory -Identity "PROD1MSEXM10A\Autodiscover (Default Web Site)" –internalurl https://webmail-eu.child.parent.company.com/autodiscover/autodiscover.xml
Set-WebServicesVirtualDirectory -Identity "PROD1MSEXM10A\EWS (Default Web Site)" -InternalUrl https://webmail-eu.child.parent.company.com/ews/exchange.asmx
Set-OABVirtualDirectory -Identity "PROD1MSEXM10A\oab (Default Web Site)" -InternalUrl https://webmail-eu.child.parent.company.com/oab
Set-OWAVirtualDirectory -Identity "PROD1MSEXM10A\owa (Default Web Site)" -InternalUrl https://webmail-eu.child.parent.company.com/owa
Set-ECPVirtualDirectory -Identity "PROD1MSEXM10A\ecp (Default Web Site)" -InternalUrl https://webmail-eu.child.parent.company.com/ecp
Set-ActiveSyncVirtualDirectory -Identity "PROD1MSEXM10A\Microsoft-Server-ActiveSync (Default Web Site)" -InternalUrl https://webmail-eu.child.parent.company.com/Microsoft-Server-ActiveSync

3. Most blogs also say that I really don't need the actual FQDNs of the CAS servers in the SAN list.  Great!  I can basically cover most bases by making sure that I have this on the SAN list:  webmail-eu.child.parent.company.com.

My SAN list starts to look even shorter without the servers' own FQDNs. Awesome!

But then this crosses my mind - These Ex2010 multirole servers are also Hub Transports!  And each one has the Default Receive Connector.  And the Default Receive Connector is set up to use the actual server's FQDN. And TLS is pretty much mandatory (I know we can disable TLS on Ex2010 hub transports, but we probably won't go there).

So in order for the TLS SMTP connection among the Hub Transports to succeed, the Default Receive Connector's FQDN has to be shown on the certificate, right?   So it looks like my celebration above was premature? We can't get rid of the server FQDNs on the SAN list after all?

It doesn't look like changing the Default Receive Connector's FQDN is a viable option.

Should I just retain the self-signed certs for the SMTP service and use the commercial cert for the rest of the services?

Thanks for any advice!

4 server cluster & site resiliency

A client has purchased 4 Exchange standard licenses... we would like to implement a DAG for their primary site, but also get some site resiliency as well to their secondary site. They are a fairly small exchange environment (<1000 MBX).

The different methods we've come up with:

2x multirole servers at primary site, 2x multirole servers at secondary site <- can't use NLB to load balance CAS/hub

2x MBX servers, 1x CAS/hub at primary site, 1x multirole server at secondary site <- we get site resiliency, a DAG with 2 mailbox servers at the primary site, and only use 4 licenses. But will this work? We don't necessarily need 2x CAS at primary site, load is rather low, we're mainly concerned about the mailbox databases and replicating those offsite. Some downtime to patch the CAS is acceptable (and we get a secondary CAS on next years budget)

1x CAS/hub, 1x MBX at primary site, same at secondary site. <- still only 4 licenses, but lose out on having a secondary mailbox database at the primary datacenter.

I'm leaning towards option 2, but can we use a multirole server at the secondary site? Our performance would still be acceptable during a site failover, even running on a single server, so performance isn't an issue we're dealing with here... we're mainly going after getting our mailbox databases replicated offsite.

Exchange 2010 native archiving question

I have a question in regards to the folder structure of the Archive mailbox when one is created.

1. Does the same exact folder structure in the primary mailbox get duplicated to the secondary (archive) mailbox? If not, what is the folder structure of the secondary (archive) mailbox when one is created?

2. Assuming the folder structure does not get duplicated, meaning custom folders created in the primary mailbox are not automatically created in the secondary (archive) mailbox, what folder does that mail, stored in the custom/user created folder, get moved to in the secondary (archive) mailbox?

Transaction Logs filling up drive

Hi all,

Whilst we know why it's happened, I was hoping I could just get some thoughts on the question below.

We noticed that our exchange log volume was filling up today. Looking at the backup logs, it would seem that our backups stopped running two days ago because Sophos marked the backup agent as Suspicious and prevented it running. I am running the backup now, and once complete, I expect the logs to truncate as per normal. That said, it is a race against time (backup running but logs filling).

How can one free up space on the volume as a temporary fix (should we find space running low before the backup completes) . Is it safe to move the old logs to a different drive? And if yes, how could we ensure that all transactions are then processed.

Any thoughts or suggestions welcomed.

Rob

I have a question in regards to the folder structure of the secondary (archive) mailbox:

1. Does the same exact folder structure that exists in the primary mailbox get duplicated to the secondary (archive) mailbox? If not, what is the folder structure of the archive mailbox when one is created?

2. Assuming custom (user created) folders created in the primary mailbox are not duplicated/replicated to the secondary (archive) mailbox, where does the mail from those custom (user created) folders get moved to? Do they get moved?
