Error on installing exchange 2010 SP3

All,

I have an exchange 2010 (no SP) installed on win 2008 R2. I downloaded SP3 and proceeded to upgrade but was confronted with this error at Hub transport role stage of upgrade:

Error:
The following error was generated when "error.Clear(): if(($server -eq $null) -and ($RolesDatacenter -ne $true))

Database is mandatory in usermailbox. Property Name: Database.

Now the shell cannot access the remote server either.

What would be the problem?
