We are having problems downloading attachments larger than 10 MB through iPad mail application, with account connected to Exchange 2010 SP2 using Exchange ActiveSync. Procedure for reproducing this problem is simple. We send e-mail with PDF attachment larger than 10 MB (e.g. 15 MB), we access it through iPad and we get message “Cannot download attachment”. Smaller attachments download without any problems.
Facts:
- Default ActiveSync policy being applied to mailboxes contains two related settings, both of them not configured on our system (Maximum attachment size and Limit e-mail size to)
- There is a setting available through "Application settings" of Microsoft-Server-ActiveSync IIS folder that is set to 10 MB. Setting name is MaxDocumentDataSize (value 10240000).
I've browsed through older posts on this forum, but I cannot find anything definite, meaning:
- some threads mention that it is enough to change MaxDocumentDataSize, and that setting can be changed through "Application settings" of Microsoft-Server-ActiveSync IIS, Edit, enter new value
- Some threads mention that it is enough to change MaxDocumentDataSize, and that setting can be changed through web.config. I am not sure what is the point of changing it through web.config instead of GUI?
- Some threads are mentioning MaxRequestLength property and setting some request filtering related properties in Exchange
My questions are:
- has anyone here stumbled upon this problem, changed some of the settings and if answer is yes, which settings and using which tool? With proliferation of iPads in enterprise it seems impossible that there is no more documentation / blog posts available and that no one has done it
- is there any reference documentation for this?
- will setting Maximum attachment size in Default ActiveSync policy help? ... e.g. if I set it to 50 MB will it change Microsoft-Server-ActiveSync IIS folder MaxDocumentDataSize settings?
- will change of Microsoft-Server-ActiveSync MaxDocumentDataSize through GUI apply without IIS restart?
