Exchange 2010 Public folder search

My client’s configuration is as follows:

Exchange 2010 Version 14.3 (Build 123.4) running on Windows 2008 R2 standard SP1

Dell Power Edge R510 32GB RAM, RAID 1 for the OS and Programs RAID 5 for the Exchange Public and Private stores and logs; stores and logs on separate partitions. The network is a typical LAN with CAT 5 Ethernet with Active Directory using standard 10/100/1000 MB switches.

We are using mail enabled public folders, however this issue is occurring with only one of the public folders that is receiving the bulk of the emails, most with attachments. The users are running Office Outlook 2007 w/ SP3 running in Non-Cached Exchange Mode. The users have added this mail enabled “Communications” folder to there “Favorites” folder for quicker searches. Mostly we have three to four users access the “communications” folder all day, the folder receives +/- 500 emails a day most with attachments; approximate size received daily 550MB.

The problem we are having is searching the folder, Outlook freezes and is unavailable until the search is completed and can be as long as 5 minutes.Because these searches are required throughout the day it’s affecting user’s productivity at high level.

Question:  Are we configured with our Exchange and Outlook client using best practices or should we be making changes that can help to improve this bottle neck?Should we be looking for a third party program that can resolve and handle this better then Exchange/Outlook?
