event ID 8010 : message rejected by remote server

Hi All

We have had a 2010 server running for about 2 months now and are in the process of moving users off out 2003 box and onto to the 2010 box. all seems to be running but seem to be getting the following event on the CAS server:

A message with the Internal Message ID #### was rejected by the remote server.  This message will be deferred and retried because it was marked for retry if rejected.  Other messages may also have encountered this error.

i have googled this and all it says to do is run the get-message command which i have done but i do not see any errors or anything just seems like the message queue

can anyone give me any ideas of what this message means and how to troubleshoot it?

Thanks

I have a DAG setup on exchagne 2010.  I had several mailbox moves going, some in progress and some queued.  The destination mailbox database failed over to a different server.  Now the inprogress and queued moves are stuck and I cant suspend them.  Any suggestions would be great.

Thank you

Exchange 2010 Client Access Service Restarts fix Disconnected state on Outlook 2010 clients

$

We have a problem every once in a while where our Help Desk cannot get the users Outlook client off of a disconnected state.  Here is the scenario:

Outlook 2010 cache mode\Encryption enabled client - Exchange 2010 sp1 Rollup 2.  CAS encryption enabled.

You can create the profile no problem.  But it always goes back to a disconnected state whenever they go into mail.  This always brings me back to Encrypt data between the Outlook client and Exchange.  Which, should be on by default within Outlook 2007 and Outlook 2010 clients and is for all of our clients.  Howver, we did put a GPO in for this for all Outlook clients since have a smattering of Outlook 2003 clients.  No matter what you do the client will never connect.  Until.....

I restarted the Client Access Service on our two CAS servers.  You then check the Outlook client...and they were fixed.  No more discconnected state.  The funny thing is too, this only happens on a few people when a new profile is created.

This of course, is not  viable solution since we basically break the connect pt for all our clients for the amount of time the service restarts.

We have been holding off on Rollup 3 v3 for sometime now with all of the issues that had come up.... (BES duplicate items, etc...).  I haven't seen anything in the description of this rollup that specifically addresses my issue.   However, I am hoping it address RPC client access service crashes or whatever is happening within my environment.  Please let me know if anyone else is experiencing these types of issues.

Thanks as always for any input.

Any suggestions. I believe it has something to do with missing AD roles and features.

User Migration along with MBs

Hi

One of our department is moving out as a seperate entity and forming a new company. They will have their own datacenter and building seperate AD forest. There are around 100 users. The existing AD is configured with Windows 2008 R2 DC (windows 2003 functional level) and mailboxes are configured with Exchange 2010. The new AD will utilize latest technologies - Windows 2012 and Exchange 2013. We are planning to use ADMT to migrate the user accounts, MBs will be moved at exchange level. We are looking for the best option to migrate the user along with their mailboxes. Since the source forest contains many applications and changes with schema each user properties contains many data. So is it feasible to create new user accounts in new forest and export and import the MBs, if this option looks goos then how it can be accomplished?

Thanks in Advance

Calendar Free/Busy permissions being ignored for users migrated from Exchange 2003, fine for new users created on Exchange 2010

$

I have uncovered a situation where it seems the free/busy permissions are being ignored for users that were migrated from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010.

I have the default permissions set to only show Free/Busy Time, not Details.  However if I look at the calendar for a users who was migrated from the old Exchange 2003 server, I can see details.  If I look at a newer user who was added directly to the Exchange 2010 server, I (correctly) only see the times and "Free" or "Busy", not the specific details.

I verified the permissions on the migrated mailboxes many different ways (Exfolders, cmdlets, etc) and all signs point to only allow showing Free/Busy Times, but alas, I can still see the Details as well.

My users are using Outlook 2010.

Some Outlook 2010 clients fail to update the "Due Date" field of a mail-enabled Task Public Folder in Exchange 2010 SP3.

My environment is Exchange 2010 SP3 (version 14.03.0123.003) and 32-bit Outlook 2010 no SP (version 14.0.1760.1000).

In a mail-enabled Task Public Folder, some users of the department A are failed to change the "Due Date" field.
After selecting the date value, the following message is prompted and it is not allowed to save.
"You cannot change this field.  No content exists. You must change the invalid field and data type."
Since the environment is Chinese interface, it is not the exact wordings.

However, some users of the same department A do not face this problem.  It can be updated normally.

Below is the selected permissions for this department A (Security Group - Universal):
Permission Level: Custom
1. Create items,
2. Read items,
3. Create subfolders,
4. Edit own (dimmed),
5. Edit all,
6. Folder visible (dimmed).

Besides other Security Groups and individual users, there is a 'Default':
Permission Level: Publishing Editor
1. Create items,
2. Read items,
3. Create subfolders,
4. Edit own (dimmed),
5. Edit all,
6. Folder visible (dimmed),
7. Delete own (dimmed),
8. Delete all.

I have tried to let a user log on another PC with the same Outlook 2010 version to generate a new Windows user profile.
The result is the same.  The field, "Due Date", is not allowed to change with the same prompting message.

Please help give me ideas!

Created mailbox for new user in Exchange 2010, user not visible in AD.

Hi everyone!

This morning I created a mailbox for a new user on my Exchange 2010 box.

Everything works fantastically but I am unable to view the new user in AD except by searching.  If I run a search the results say the user exists in my Users container, and I can view the properties of the user account from the search results, but I am unable to actually see the user profile object in the Users container.

I notice in EMC that the mailbox has a user icon on the mailbox icon instead of the regular standard icon - I'm not sure what this implies.

Can anyone offer some advice as to why this happens and how to resolve it?

Thanks!

Moving a DAG member's storage to a new filer.

I have a 3-node DAG in Exchange 2010 SP2, RU6; let's call the nodes EX2010A, EX2010B, and EX2010C.  There is also a fourth Exchange 2010 server with only CA and HT services.  All mailbox databases have a copy on all 3 DAG nodes, with all the databases on the N: drive and the logs for all the databases on the P: drive.  The N: and P: drives on EX2010A are luns on a NetApp filer; EX2010B and EX2010C have their N: and P: drives on a local RAID array.

We are replacing the filer currently used by EX2010A, so I need to move the Exchange data to a new lun on that new filer.  The NetApp tech assisting us plans to connect EX2010A to the new luns (as different drive letters), stop the Exchange services so that there is no activity on that copy of the databases and logs, use Windows to copy the contents of N: and P: to the new luns, disconnect from the old luns, change the new luns to use N: and P: as their drive letters, then restart the Exchange services and let Exchange bring the databases back into a healthy state.

Is that procedure correct?  Would stopping the Exchange services be adequate to put those databases and logs in a static state so that we can successfully perform a file copy as outlined above?

Should I use the StartDagServerMaintenance.ps1 script on EX2010A prior to the copy, or does that script actually shut down the local copies of the databases so that we can perform a file copy of the databases and logs?

Thank you very much for your help and advice on this.

Storing Mailbox DBs and Logs on Network Drives

I have two VMs running Windows Server 2008 R2.

The first server is running Exchange 2010 SP3 and the second is running the file-server role.

I would like to know whether it is possible to store all the mailbox databases/logs on the file-server. I know - strictly speaking - Exchange only permits the creation of mailbox database/logs on a fixed volume but does anyone know of a straight-forward workaround for this restriction?

Both servers are on the same domain and subnet. File transfer between the two has been confirmed OK.

exchange 2010 Management Console initialization failed from a REMOTE Administration server

I installed the Exchange 2010 Management console on my Symantec Backup Exec 2012 server, this is a pre-requisite for backing up an Exchange Information Store using the Exchange Agent for Backup Exec. During the initialization while the console is searching for the on-premise Exchange server i get the following error message.

exchange 2010 initialization failed Discover-ExchangeServer -UseWIA $true -SuppressError $true -CurrentVersion 'Version 14.3 (Builde 123.4)'

Nothing in the error mentions authentication or WinRM errors, most of the post for "EMC initialization failed" messages talk about fixing the RemotePowershellEnable status. The domain user i am using is Administrator, which i know has Exchange Admin rights, and when i run the following: (Get-User domain-name\administrator).RemotePowershellEnabled, the status returned is "True".

The EMC on the Exchange 2010 server is functioning perfectly, and Exchange itself is working very well. I would just like to run the EMC from this remote server. The server is a member of the same domain as the Exchange server, i only have one. I am logged into the server using the domain administrator's credentials.

About the actual server; it is a Dell PowerEdge T100 running Windows Server 2008 STD 64-bit with SP2, fully patched. What i've tried so far is to run this Exchange Management Troubleshooter, (EMTshooter), but i am having powershell problems running it.  I try running it from the Exchange Management Shell, the script opens a new window and an new message tell me to run the shortcut with an elevated level. Which doesn't make any sense because aren't i already at an elevated level when i run the Exchange Management Shell? I'm logged in as an Administrator for Pete's sake, Very frustrating.

I had not problem installing the EMC on this server, i only had one hotfix that needed to be installed, after that the installation passed all of the per-requisites, and installed without errors.

I could use some help getting the EMC to run on the server, thanks

Using DISM to upgrade a WIndows 2008 R2 STD with Exhange Server 2010

Hi.

We are currently changing our license plan, and have purchased new Datacenter Windows 2008 R2 licenses. Want to upgrade our current Standard Server 2008 R2 servers. I have successfully upgraded a fileserver using the DISM utility. (DISM /online /Set-Edition:ServerDatacenter /productkey:ABCDE-ABCDE-ABCDE-ABCDE-ABCDE).

Want to do the same upgrade on an Exchange 2010 SP1 server, holding all Exchange-roles. This server is no DC. This article says DC is the only issue: http://blogs.technet.com/b/server_core/archive/2009/10/14/upgrading-windows-server-2008-r2-without-media.aspx

This article (below) says a person successfully upgraded a Exchange 2010 SP1 server using DISM.

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/eng-tr/winservergen/thread/518cce78-27c1-44e4-85c5-4e8e09f0aba9 (09 March 2011).

Does anyone have knowledge of this?

If it not works will DISM stop the upgrade, or will the upgrade go on and Exchange be corrupted? (worst case scenario)

Shared mailbox contacts to Address Book

Hi all

We have recently migrated to an Exchange 2010 environment, our clients using Outlook 2003 and Outlook 2010.

We have a large number of shared mailboxes within our organisation that contain their own contacts lists. The shared mailbox is added as as additional mailbox to the users' own profile as they have been delegated full access to manage and maintain all items.

The issue we are having is trying to get the contacts list on the shared mailbox to show up in the users address book when sending an email.

I have had a search on the net for an answer to this and the only thing I can get to work to is creating a new profile for the shared mailbox and renaming the contacts as discussed in the following thread: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/exchangesvrclients/thread/62befbae-ceaa-482b-b450-e448f8d1a265

The issue with this however is that it only seems to temporarily work - after closing the profile for the shared mailbox and opening the user profile it will only appear in the address book for the first time; after closing and reopening Outlook the contacts list for the shared mailbox disappears.

Even if we did get this method to work every time, it seems a little long winded. Some shared mailboxes are used by about 10 different users and having to get them to create a new profile for the shared mailbox seems a little full on just to get the contacts list to show up in their address book.

Other threads on the net have suggested just going into the properties of the Contact item on the shared mailbox and ticking the "Show this folder as an e-mail Address Book". The issue I am having is that the there is no such tick box. In fact the"Outlook Address Book" tab isn't even there. The users' have been given full control of the contacts as they are able to create/modify/delete contacts when they actually select the contact objects from the shared mailbox.

We have just moved from an Oracle mail environment where this was possible and so would like to know if sharing contacts is a supported feature of Exchange 2010/Outlook. If so, how?

Cheers
Brady
