Recover "corrupted" items after moving a mailbox from Exchange 2003 to 2010?

$
0
0

This is likely a lost cause, but I have to try.  A customer is migrating from Exchange 2003 to 2010 and I have both E2003 and E2010 coexisting.  Right now, we're moving mailboxes one by one from 2003 to 2010 using the 2010 EMC mailbox move request wizard.  We ran across a few mailboxes with corrupted items, including one small mailbox with 30+ corrupted items.

We moved that small mailbox anyway, telling it to ignore (a large number) of corrupted items.  This, of course, was a mistake because the 2010 target is now missing all those corrupted items and we don't know what they were.

Is there anything we can do, short of a major Exchange 2003 restore effort, to recover those corrupted items into a mailbox or PST or other usable form?

thanks

Outlook OWA folder permissions

Have a new server setup with Exchange 2010.  The email accounts were preexisting and imported from an IMAP account.

The accounts seem to be working fine with one exception.  If the account is being accessed via OWA, the user cannot move emails from the inbox to the folders that were created from the import.  If a new folder is created then they have full access.  Also they can move emails into those folders if they are using Outlook.

Following the advice of another person on another forum I used the Get-Folderpermission command to get the folder permissions.  It was then I realized I hadn't put the latest version of SP2 on and promptly installed it.  I say this because I see some posts out there that say installing SP2 should fix permission issues.

Here is what I get from using the command on folders I can and cannot copy emails to.

First here is the results of Get-Folderpermission on one of the folders I am unable to copy to in OWA.

This is the result I got from using  Get-Folderpermission on a folder I created from OWA.

Exchange 2010 SP2 DB growing so fast even after moving mailboxes

Hi,

I request your advice for DB size growing issue

i have over 5500 users (migrated from 2003 server) in a single 2010 SP2 DB. My SAN volume  where DB is located having 454 GB total space and the DB has grown to 414 GB now and since yesterday i started moving mailboxes to another DB ( 110 GB SSD HDD) as we do not have lack of SAN volumes. But still i see the database is growing quickly even though i have moved 16 GB of mailboxes to another DB mentioned before. During the past 24 hrs the DB has grown by 5 GB and i am afraid that i will run out of space soon. When i did a periodic  check today  for available white space it shows maximum 110 MB and the database keep growing. As you can see the report below the database is growing , the second DB is where i am moving mailboxes. I have enabled back ground maintenance for both DB and enabled circular logging to truncate the logs

Exchange 2010 calendars default to Reviewer instead of Free/Busy time

I am wanting to know if there is a way to change the default permissions for Exchange calendars. Ideally when I create a new user's mailbox I want it to have their calendar set to Reviewer instead of Free/Busy time by default.

I am not looking for a cmdlet to change EXISTING users' permissions.

Exchange 2010 DAG Design

$

Hi All,

I have some questions about a 3 node Dag. Two of the nodes are going to be in the same site (server A and B) and the other in another Physical/AD site (server C)

All servers are going to be running all three Exchange roles. Server A will be Phyiscal using lcoal storage and Servers B and C will be Virtual on shared storage. Servers A and B will be sitting behind a netscaler for load balancing of the CAS role.

My question is if i can have server's A and B in an Active Active DAG (dont even know if this is possible) so i can have local site redundancy and load balancing for the mail box role. then the server C will be a passive DAG node.

Also, for redundancy of incoming mail, can i just set up two MX records pointing to the netscaler and the other to Server C (mx for Server C would have a different prioirty value)

Is this a valid high level design. am i missing anything out.

Thanks

Add Recovery Database Copy To Another Server

Hi, Is it possible to add a Database marked as Recovery to a DAG? I want to create another copy of a recovery database so that it is stored on another server. Is adding a Recovery database to a DAG supported?

Continue to get Autodiscover warning in Oulook 2010 running on Exchange 2010.

I've been battling this for sometime and cannot figure out how to resolve it.

Any guidance would be great! :)

I have a Exchange 2010 server running all of the roles except for the Edge Transport role.

Domain is 2008 R2 with Certificate role installed on domain controller.

I've followed through the process of generating a new certificate and applying it to the Exchange 2010 server. I followed this BLOG that appeared to be straight forward.

**These are inserts from a BLOG, I just modified for my environment.**
Generating a Certificate Request

In order to create a new certificate, you need to generate a certificate request using the New-ExchangeCertificate cmdlet. Once you have a certificate request generated, you can obtain a certificate from an internal Certificate Authority (CA) or a 3rd party external CA.

In this example, we’ll generate a request using two Subject Alternative Names (SANs). This will allow us to support multiple URLs with one certificate:

$cert = New-ExchangeCertificate -GenerateRequest -SubjectName “c=US, o=Litware, cn=mail.litware.internal” -DomainName owa.litware.internal,mail.litware.internal -PrivateKeyExportable $true

As you can see in the example, we’ve saved the output of the command in a variable called $cert. Next, export the data to a text file using the Out-File cmdlet:

$cert | Out-File c:\cert.txt

After the request has been saved in the text file, submit the request to a CA to obtain the certificate.
Installing a Certificate

After you obtain a certificate from a CA, you can install it on the Exchange server. To do this, you’ll need to use the Import-ExchangeCertificate cmdlet. The syntax would look something like this:

Import-ExchangeCertificate -FileData ([Byte[]]$(Get-Content -Path c:\cert.cer -Encoding Byte -ReadCount 0))

Now that the certificate is installed, you need to enable it and assign the services that it will be used for. I’ve found that the easiest way to do this is to pipe the output from Get-ExchangeCertificate to Enable-ExchangeCertificate. For example, let’s say I just installed a certificate that contains the domain name owa.litware.internal. I would use the following command to enable this certificate and assign the IIS and SMTP services on a CAS+Hub server:

Get-ExchangeCertificate -DomainName owa.litware.internal | Enable-ExchangeCertificate -Services IIS,SMTP

Keep in mind that when you enable the SMTP service for a certificate on a hub transport server, you will be prompted to overwrite the existing self signed certificate.

Set-ActiveSyncVirtualDirectory -Identity “mbx1\Microsoft-Server-ActiveSync (Default Web Site)” -InternalURL https://nlb.nwtraders.msft/Microsoft-Server-Activesync

DAG - Error during initial seeding

Hi everybody. I'm having a little bit of trouble to put some databases on high-availbility with Exchange 2010.

I'm using Exchange 2010 SP2 (with no rollup updates installed)

If i create a new database for testing proposes i'm able to create the passive copy with success. But if i try to create the passive copy of an existing database, i receive the following message:

"The required log file "log number" for MailboxName\servername is missing on the active copy. If you removed the log file, please replace it. If the log file is lost, the database copy will need to be reseeded using Update-MailboxDatabaseCopy."

I'm using Windows Server Backup in the active host, and it's configured to do a full VSS Backup, and the logs are being truncated with success.

I've read in some forums that one thing i can do is dismount the active copy, move the logs to another folder, copy the edb file to the passive host and then mount the active copy again. They say that after this procedure the initial seeding will complete sucessfully.

Is this procedure really works? Is there any alternative to it?

Need direct link to OWA change password URL

I need to send users a direct link to the OWA change password section under the Options tab in Exchange 2010.

I can't seem to get this right, can someone tell me how to direct-link to this page?  I know users will have to authenticate to change their password, and this is my intent.

move users from failed store

Hi,

Our test environment is made using cloned AD DCs and a new install of a CAS/MBX server.

450 users are on a mailbox store that doesnt exist any more. Is there a way to move users from the failed/unreachable store to the new store? I dont expect any of their data but I wanted to avoid removing all attribs and recreating them.

Thoughts?

Create User no Create Mailbox / and vice versa

I installed exchange 2010 this past summer and it was working great.  I have 18 users all working perfectly now.  I'm not sure what I did a few weeks ago, but I broke something, because I can not make new user/mailbox combinations anymore.  Maybe it's the SP1 patch and rollup I added, I dont know.   Anyway the symptoms are simple.

I can create a Active Directory User, they don't show up in the Recipient Configuration, New Mailbox anymore so I cant create a mailbox for them.

I can create a mailbox for a new user, the mailbox shows up, but no user shows up in Active Directory.

I can do both, but there's no link between them.

There is one user I created before this broke, and it WILL show up in the Recipient Configuration, New Mailbox list, so I could theoretically create a mailbox for it if I needed to.

Any ideas?  Thanks!

My organization is preparing to migrate from Exchange 2007 to 2010 and we are also looking to consolidate some services. I was wondering if Exchange 2010 DL's could be used to replace Mailman lists? Can the hardware support this? We have Active Directory.

Change permissions on "Top of Information Store" folder

Hey Guys,

We're having an issue with Enterprise Vault that I believe is due to an Exchange 2010 mailbox permissions problem.

Using ExFolders I checked the user's permissions and noticed that on the "Top of Information Store", <Default> is set to "Owner".  Checked other mailboxes and they have <Default> set to "None".

Any harm in changing that with ExFolders?  I obviously don't want to cause any bigger issues for the user's mailbox.

Thanks!

Issues when connecting with Outlook to a mailbox in a DAG environment

$

We have a two site DAG environment.  1 Mailbox Server and 1 HUB/CAS server in 1 site(Site A)  and the same in the other site (Site B)

When we connect with outlook from Site A, and the mailbox is located on the server in Site A, outlook connects to the CAS server in Site B.  Then we get certificate warnings, which I think is an issue as well.

Shouldn't outlook use the CAS server in the same site that you're located in?

Let me know if there is any further information you may need.

These are all Exchange 2010 servers

Thank you,

Mike

Exchange 2010 Datacentre Failover

$

Hi,

I am trying to understanding how cas array works in a site failover. We are going to have two sites SiteA and SiteB that will be connected via Gb link. Essentially we will have two Exchange 2010 Servers on each site ( CAS/HT & MBX). SiteA will be active and SiteB will be passive so we will manually bring online using DNS name changes, we will share all namespaces where possible i.e. autodiscver, ews etc.

Now my confusion is CAS Arrays. I will create a CAS Array for each AD Site and assign to local database.

so casarrrayA.domain.x and casarrayB.domain.x

In the occurrence of SiteA failure I will change the autodiscover, ews, owa records to point to SiteB. However how does this work for CAS Array as my second CAS Array is different DNS name i.e. how does Outlook Client pickup casararrayB.domain.x to connect to databases in SiteB?

Thanks

Hi all,

Exchange 2010 SP1

We have several users with two mailboxes.
is there a way to merge or combine two mailboxes into one mailbox through powershell
instead of exporting each folder in the first mailbox to pst and importing into the second one?

Thank you.
